I had a dream last night that asked that question and we had to find an answer before we could eat. Initially I was looking for the biblical answer and thumbing through the concordance in the back of mine. I was trying to find a verse that summed it up and not sure there is just one - haven't studied it before writing this yet.
Adam and Eve were created in the garden physically perfect and I'm believing, in all other ways also. But, they were also born like all of us since - with a free will. The serpent (Lucifer) lied to Eve and told her that she wouldn't die if she ate from the tree in the middle of the garden but, be made like a god knowing good and evil. Tempted, when she looked at the tree, she of course took from it and gave to Adam.
Once they realized they were naked, they became ashamed and lied to God when he asked them what had happened. He already knew but, I think wanted them to be honest about it and confess their sin: rebellion. God could no longer be with them, his children and family, anymore and sent them from the garden. He didn't want them to be knowledgeable about evil, only good which I think may be universal with all parents. Now that they had become wise about all things, he had to figure out a way to get them back home and that's what Jesus did for us by giving himself as that sacrifice for sin, instead of everyone trying to live right and perfectly. Which is impossible to do alone.
Sin then, I think, is a condition that we're born with and can't escape without his free gift.
