Technology

Books, books, and more books!

I've always loved books. A lot. It probably has a lot to do with the amount of time I spent as a child, sick in bed with nothing else to do. To me, the perfect use of a whole day, rainy or not, is curling up in a nice chair with a good book and some quiet music. These days, being the father of three kids, having one job that I do for money, and another that I do out of love of my Creator, my book time is precious and scarce. However, I've still accomplished a lot of reading. Today, I discovered a new web site for people like me, LibraryThing.

Gastronomic Cartography

I love food.  I also love computers and other technological things.  So, it's only natural that I would find a way to put the two together.  I started using Google's "My Maps" feature to map out my favorite places to eat.  The rules are simple - no chains or traditional "fast food," no pretentious artsy fartsy crap, just good eating.  Bonus points to places that serve up something tasty on the cheap.  Vince got in on the act, too.

Window into the (Online) World

It's amazing what you can learn about people, even if you don't know them.  I was digging through some of the logs for this site, combatting the latest round of spammers trying to post their filth as comments, when I noticed something I hadn't before:  I get statistics from the site software on how people are coming into the site.  In geek terms, it's called the "referrer" and it basically shows where you were before you came here.  It's not surprising to me that the #1 referrer, at 6021 hits and counting, is Google.  The part I like are the ones with only one or two hits.  They are simultaneously entertaining and disturbing, and sometimes I really wonder how they got here from there.  Case in point: the Canadian who came here from Google after searching on "after eating steak pain and vomiting of white stringy mucus."
